Weekly Newsletter Grade 5
Dates: October 2-6, 2017

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy: Students will continue to work on their literary essays based on their book club groups. They will come up with strong reasons about their claim and support them with a variety of evidence. You can help them strengthen their claims by talking about them at home and asking questions to get them thinking about why they support the claim and what precise words may bring power to their writing.

Math: Adding and subtracting fractions continues this week as we work with operations with unlike denominators. Students will develop conceptual understanding using manipulatives and models to show their thinking. They will explore and discuss ways to efficiently solve problems by being flexible with numbers. Additionally, we will be solving and creating word problems with both adding and subtracting fractions. This will be part of home learning, so feel free to get involved!

Unit of Study:  We conducted a very successful ‘Social Change Maker’s Conference’ last Tues. and Wed. The students experienced 12 presenters and were inspired to make changes in our own school and local community. It was great to see so many parents attending the conference this year. I am sure some of you got some ideas shared with you. If you are wondering how to keep those ideas alive and support your child in making a change, please contact me. I may be able to help give you contacts/ideas on how to facilitate these ambitions.
