Weekly Newsletter Grade 5
Dates:May 7th-11th

Dear Parents,

Curriculum Information for this Week:

Literacy & Unit of Study: This week students will reflect on their Global Goal that we researched and think about how they as students can make a difference and impact others.  Students will reflect on their performance in the Night of the Notables and understand that as students they too can be activists. This week students will use their research to start compiling an opinion or informational essay on their chosen social issue and notable person/people, which will form an integral part of their ‘Blackboard Project’.

Math: Students will continue our Volume and Measurement Unit. They will measure necessary attributes of shapes in order to determine volumes to solve real world and mathematical problems. Students will also convert like measurement units within the metric system and solve word problems relating to those conversions. They will also use formula such as V = L X W X H and V = B X H to solve problems.

Night of the Notables (NotN): In addition to the above, students will continue our Social Change unit by presenting to 4th grade in our dress rehearsal and then finally to the parents on Tuesday evening.  The NotN presentation will be on the evening of Tuesday 8 May. The show starts at 6:30pm but please note that the students will need to be back at school by 6:00pm so they have time to change into their black & white presentation clothes and assemble in the G5 common area.

Newsletter May 2

Weekly Newsletter Grade 5
Dates: April 30-May 4

Dear Parents,

Curriculum Information for this Week:

Literacy & Unit of Study: Students will continue to learn about social issues and human rights. They will continue to research their individual social issue and notable person/people involved in the issue using the Melawati Library online resources and library books located in the common area. Students are taking notes as they go in their social studies notebooks or on a Google doc. Sources used will also be noted and included in a bibliography. Students are starting to organise their information to help them move towards an informational writing piece, which will form an integral part of their ‘Blackboard Project’.

Math: Students will continue our Volume and Measurement Unit. This week they will continue to decompose three-dimensional shapes and find solid and liquid volumes of right rectangular prisms by viewing them as decomposed into layers of arrays of cubes. They will measure necessary attributes of shapes in order to determine volumes to solve real world and mathematical problems. Students will also convert like measurement units within the metric system and solve word problems relating to those conversions. They will also use formula such as V = L X W X H and V = B X H to solve problems.

Night of the Notables (NotN): In addition to the above, students will continue our Social Change unit by preparing for their class NotN 2018 presentation. The class scripts have been finalized and all classes have had several practice sessions in the studio. The NotN presentation will be on the evening of Tuesday 8 May. The show starts at 6:30pm but please note that the students will need to be back at school by 6:00pm so they have time to change into their black & white presentation clothes and assemble in the G5 common area.

For more information and ways to support your child please visit the Parent Learning Connection page.

Important Reminders/Information: (also see GLC Updates)
Please continue to help your child review their lines for their class NotN presentation. They should be LOUD and CLEAR. Take videos of your child to allow them to hear exactly what they sound like. It is very helpful.

Highlight from last week:
* Last Wed. morning, G5 students met a young 10-year-old social change maker from Perth Australia - Olive Forbes - who is campaigning against plastic microbeads in cosmetic products. The students were involved in a Skype interview with Olive on the big screen in the common area. Olive is a very articulate and passionate young person, so it was a fantastic experience for our students to meet her and ask her questions. Thanks to 5CC for organizing this event.
* NotN Yearbook photos were taken in the studio last Friday morning by Mr. Fauzi Agung! Look out for those in the Yearbook.
